Glendessary Jam has been getting together in Santa Barbara, California, to play Old Time Music for nearly 30 years. The group is not a formal "band" but gather at least once a week for the sheer love of the music. They learn by ear and jam together to carry on the two-hundred-year tradition of mostly Appalachian dance tunes and back porch melodies. Many of their tunes are derived from Irish and Scottish traditions (as well as other European traditions) that crossed the Atlantic and melded with the African-American banjo, to become the Old Time Music. Many of the songs and tunes they play trace the history of the United States from colonial days, through the American Revolution, the Gold Rush and the Civil War, into the 20th century, and up through the 1930s when radio and recordings opened new chapters in the evolution of these tunes, and the games and dances associated with them.
