Seattle based Irish artist Paula Stokes in conversation with Dr. Audrey Whitty, the Director of the National Library of Ireland. Paula Stokes will discuss the inspiration of her site-specific blown glass installation, 1845: Memento Mori, a memorial to the 19th century Irish famine, and its subsequent evolution as it was reimagined and exhibited in historic venues in the USA, UK and in Ireland, including Strokestown Park House, the National Museum of Ireland, the Ulster Museum, and Dublin Castle (2019-2022). The work was acquired by the National Museum of Ireland, through the staunch advocacy of Dr. Audrey Whitty during her tenure as Deputy Director of the National Museum of Ireland. 1845: Memento Mori will be featured as part of a future renovation within the full suite of the History of Ireland galleries, in a permanent gallery space taking a social, cultural and political approah to exploring Ireland’s history in the last 420 years.
