Gulliver’s Travels, Swift’s great work of satirical genius, appeared 300 years ago in 1726. Travel is both the vehicle of the satire and a major object of satire itself. In this talk, Professor Daniel Carey (President, Royal Irish Academy/University of Galway) discusses Swift’s explosion of conventions of travel writing through his problematic narrative guide, Gulliver himself.
