In the region of 250,000 Irish American served in the United States military during the Civil War. Drawing on a newly discovered body of letters written by hundreds of enlisted Irish men, this talk will explore their experiences—including who they were, why they fought and the challenges they faced in service. The talk is based on the new book Green & Blue: Irish Americans in the Union Military, 1861-65.
